“Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot and auld lang syne…”

As we prepare for the new year, we look back on what was a monumental year for SemaConnect and the EV industry. Here are a few highlights:

After being awarded a contract as part of Electrify America’s big electric vehicle charging network in December, we started our rollout of Level 2 charging stations at workplaces and multifamily properties across America.

We were sued by ChargePoint and won! US District Judge Marvin J. Garbis dismissed the patent lawsuit, saying that connecting a device to the internet to communicate in an expected way is an abstract idea that cannot be patented. ChargePoint does not have an exclusive right to the concept of networked charging stations or charging stations that connect to the internet.

As of October, there are officially over 1,000,000 electric vehicles in the United States! The Tesla Model 3 has been a big driver in these sales; as of the writing of this post, it is one of the 20 most popular vehicles in the United States.

In mid-October, we joined Veloz, an exciting alliance of automakers, utility companies, and charging companies in promoting EV awareness in California.

At the end of the month, Electrify America announced its game changing interoperability agreement, which will connect over 12,000 charging stations from three different charging companies by June 2019.

Looking back on 2018

2018 was a tipping point for electric vehicles and SemaConnect. We had the honor of serving more property managers and drivers this year than ever before. Many state and local governments introduced incentives and sustainability action plans to promote EVs and EV charging. Electric vehicles went mainstream, our team grew, and we had our best year yet.

So thanks to you for a fantastic year. Here’s to 2019!
