2019 was the year that climate change, energy efficiency, and electric cars went mainstream in the media. We saw superheroes driving the e-tron. We saw cities and states across the country introduce rebate programs to support electric vehicles. We saw a familiar face promoting electric vehicles in California. In all, 2019 was a monumental year for electric vehicles and EV charging. Here are three of the biggest trends that we noticed this year.

Electric vehicles are innovating

2019 was the year for new EV announcements. General Motors announced that Cadillac would be its new leader in electric vehicles, that new electric models would be built at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, and that Lordstown would become the home of GM’s own gigafactory.. Ford invested in the exciting electric pickup startup, Rivian, and announced the upcoming electric F-150. And, of course, a few weeks ago, Tesla premiered the Cybertruck.

Electrical contractors are reaching out

As more property managers bought EV charging stations in 2019, they asked their electricians and general contractors to install their new energy efficient equipment. This year, we saw an increase in electricians who had so enjoyed installing SemaConnect charging stations for one client, that now they wanted to learn more about providing smart EV charging stations to everyone else!

In 2019, more electrical contractors started attending EV charging webinars, inquiring about our installation partner program, and suggesting SemaConnect charging stations to their clients.

More property managers are being proactive

EV adoption across North America certainly varies by region, state, and city. What we are seeing now is that property managers are investing now in their properties’ future needs. In a true “if you build it, they will come” fashion, our repeat clients are buying electric vehicle charging stations now to prepare for tomorrow. They (or their electricians) are purchasing and installing their stations before the building’s ribbon cutting because they know that new smart EV charging stations will help attract their first, 100th, and 1000th customer.
