Two big announcements rocked the automobile world this week: first, that Tesla had outsold all the competition in its segment during the month of July; second, that the EPA was considering rolling back the fuel efficiency and emissions standards for new cars. While it’s easy to focus on the second piece of news and worry about the future of hybrid and electric vehicles, we’d argue that Tesla’s sales are proof that the future of electric vehicles is secure.

According to CleanTechnica’s graph of Small & Midsize Luxury Car Sales, Tesla sold a whopping 13,500 Model 3s, followed by Mercedes C-Class with 6,029 sales. Thirteen thousand, five hundred. That’s more than double the sales of the second highest-selling model, which happens to be a conventional internal combustion vehicle.

According to a different report from CleanTechnica, the Model 3 was the eighth highest-selling car out of ALL models in July- luxury, trucks, vans, compact cars, and more. For a new model from a company whose first vehicle was only released ten years ago, that is amazing.

Drivers want to do the right thing when it comes to the environment.

Drivers today do research into the cars that they consider buying. Plug-in electric vehicles are good for the environment, and owners want to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. After switching to an electric vehicle, they discover that they save money on charging and maintenance. In fact, because electric vehicles have fewer moving parts that can break down, “just over half [of EV owners] cite spending under $100 per year.” While an EV has a higher upfront cost, it ends up being more cost-efficient than a gasoline car.

Performance and style were the other two big reasons why drivers in the CarMax and CleanTechnica survey bought an electric vehicle. Simply put, electric cars look cool. But besides the visual aspect of an EV, there are also a number of fascinating innovations happening inside the car body.

Innovation and Electric Vehicles

Someone asked us yesterday what kind of batteries electric vehicles use. Many use lithium-ion batteries, but we’ve heard exciting reports about manufacturers’ developments into solid-state batteries. As drivers demand EVs with longer ranges and faster charging capabilities, engineers work to make batteries themselves more efficient. According to Forbes, “in 2017, car manufacturers targeted higher battery capacities of over 60 kWh that increased the range of an EV up to 200 miles on a single charge.” For comparison, in 2011, the highest range of an EV on a full charge was 94 miles. Battery range and efficiency will only increase.

We’re excited about the engineering behind the 870,000+ electric vehicles on the road today. While government regulations and emissions standards certainly have an effect on the electric vehicles built by major automakers, we believe that electric vehicles are inevitable. Tesla’s success and the amazing developments in EV engineering are proof that electric vehicles are taking off.
